BASIC EMERGENCY PROCEDURE: BREATHING EMERGENCIES

Such emergencies may be caused by a variety of things including airway obstruction, ingestion of poison, injury to chest or lungs, heart-attack, allergic reactions, and electrocution. If a person is not breathing, there will not be an up-an-down movement of the chest or abdomen, and you will not be able to hear or feel air being exhaled. Listen and feel at the nose or mouth for breathing. If the victim is not breathing, gently tilt his or her head back and lift the chin. This reopens the airway by moving the tongue away from the back of the throat.

Mouth-To-Mouth Resuscitation

The method of artificial ventilation used most often to restore breathing is mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Here are the basic steps involved:

A) Place the palm of one hand on the victim’s forehead and the fingers of your other hand under the bony part of his or her chin and tilt the head back.

B) Pinch the victim’s nose shut. Open your mouth and take in a deep breath.
