CONTRACEPTION, PLANNING A FAMILY AND INFERTILITY: SEX POSITIONS

If you are fertile it does not matter in what position you have intercourse, but if you are

sub-fertile it can make all the difference as to whether or not you will conceive. The first thing to try is to put a pillow under the woman’s hips so that the pool of semen ejaculated into the top of her vagina does not run straight back out again. The woman lies down after intercourse for half an hour and should not get up to pass water or to wash. Ideally, she should go to sleep in this position, but this may be inconvenient.

For a woman whose uterus is retroverted (tipped backwards), raising the hips takes her cervix out of the pool of semen in her vagina and so makes a pregnancy less likely. These women are more likely to conceive if they use an ‘all-fours’ position for intercourse. The woman kneels on the bed with her elbows and forearms on the bed. This allows exceptionally deep penetration of the penis and bathes the cervix in semen.

Generally speaking, if you are having difficulty in conceiving you should use the positions that give the deepest possible penetration. If deep penetration is painful you should see your doctor.
