GARLIC AS A HERBAL REMEDY IN CANCER TREATMENT

Garlic has been prized for over 5000 years in all parts of the world. This bulbous herb is commonly known throughout the world as ‘nature’s antibiotic’, as it protects against infection by enhancing the body’s immune function. Garlic acts in a similar way to penicillin, destroying harmful bacteria. It is a strong immune stimulant and possesses anti-tumour and anti-carcinogertic functions. Garlic also detoxifies the body, lowers blood pressure and improves blood circulation. It has an amazing ability to lower high blood cholesterol levels.

Garlic is a power-packed herb containing allicin, allyl disulfides, calcium, copper, essential oils, germanium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium, selenium, sulphur, unsaturated aldehydes, zinc, Vitamin À, Â1, B2 and Vitamin C. It is a natural antioxidant with an ability to increase natural killer cell activity and T-Cell activity (infection fighting cells of the immune system). Its ability to enhance the immune system is due to its high levels of selenium, gluatathione and germanium. Garlic is good for virtually any illness or infection.

The abundance of sulphur in garlic simply adds to its amazing healing capabilities. People around the world have been visiting hot springs containing sulfur for many years to cure all kinds of serious ailments. The bulb of the garlic plant is the major part used for medicinal purposes.

In over 30 nutritional studies, doctors found garlic and onions play a large role in decreasing the number of cancer deaths throughout the world. Garlic is believed to protect against radiation damage and breast cancer, stop the effects of skin cancer and slow the growth of tumour cells, while speeding the growth of healthy tissues. In countries where a lot of garlic is used in the diet, the cancer rate is very low. In China, people who regularly consume garlic and onions, have a low incidence of stomach cancer.

Garlic contains allyl sulphides, compounds that help the body to excrete cancer-causing substances before they can do any damage. It not only helps in the treatment of cancer, it is also beneficial in circulatory problems, arthritis, arteriosclerosis, colds, asthma, digestive problems, reduces the risk of heart attacks, insomnia, liver disease, sinusitis, skin infections, ulcers, blood sugar problems and yeast infections.

What is the best way to use garlic?

• Juiced or whole – for cancer treatment, try to eat at least 3 cloves per day. These can also be

juiced. One clove of garlic yields about l0mg of alliin and a total alliin potential of 4000mcg.

• Capsules – kyolic garlic oil capsules are available from your health food store.

Warning!

Toxicity of garlic is rare. However, some reports indicate excessive doses can trigger red blood cell destruction and anaemia. To avoid gastric upset, take garlic with meals. I like to juice garlic with a green vegetable juice or crush garlic and spread on whole-wheat toast with avocado. Heating garlic may destroy some of its healing compounds.
